UAE developer starts reconstruction of Abu Dhabi island left untouched for decades
The island was built in the 1990’s, and is located about 500 metres from Abu Dhabi’s Corniche.
An island that was constructed decades ago in Abu Dhabi, and has been left idle for years is set to finally be transformed.
The man-made Lulu Island was built in the 1992 to serve as a breakwater against high-tides.
The island is only accessible by boat, but after years of idleness, the ghost island is set to be reimagined by UAE developer Eagle Hills Properties.
Lulu Island is in a prime location, only a stone throw from the Corniche, 500 metres to be precise.
With stunning beaches and panoramic views of he city the island has huge potential, and now that potential is set to be realised following the confirmation that Eagle Hills Properties is taking control of the project.
There have been false dawns in the past, but works have already started to commence on Lulu Island.
Boats from Blue Shark Boat Rental have been transiting workers to the island, and Lulu has been a hive of activity with cranes and excavators in use on a daily basis.
In addition to this, a handful of show homes have popped up in recent weeks facing the city.
Eagle Hills Properties is headed by Mohamed Alabbar, the Emirati real estate giant behind Emaar and projects such as Burj Khalifa and Dubai Mall.
Abu Dhabi is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world.
However, the leadership in the UAE capital is always searching for ways in which it can attract more people to visit and live in the city.
The Plan Abu Dhabi 2030 framework sits inside the government’s broader Vision 2030.
It provides some insight into possible development of the island – and numbers circulated indicate the island’s projected population is an estimated 20,000 people.
In the document it says that Al Lulu Island is identified as perhaps the most important element of the Capital City Framework.
The document states, “It has immense symbolic importance and is proposed as a primary site for unfolding the story of Abu Dhabi’s history, achievements, personality and culture.”
