Dubai’s ‘Big Ben’ gets a new look as Clock Tower crown is removed
The ‘time’ has come for one of the most iconic towers on Sheikh Zayed Road to get a new facelift.
One of Dubai’s most popular buildings in its iconic skyline is set to be given a huge makeover.
Dubai’s ‘Big Ben’ on Sheikh Zayed Road, also known to many residents as the ‘Clock Tower’ will soon become a distant memory.
AHS Properties has revealed that a new architectural design will replace the old crown of the building.
AHS Properties will relaunch the tower as a new modern office destination under the name of the ‘AHS Tower’.
Interestingly. the clock was never actually installed in Big Ben, and the old facade of the building was allocated space for the clock face within the tower’s crown.
The new exterior design is the work of renowned architect Shawn Killa, who is the designer of one of Dubai’s other iconic landmarks, the Museum of the Future.
The Museum of the Future closes its doors to the public on September 1, as it undergoes its own major transformation.
The redesign of the building, particularly the removal of the crown, presents a significant engineering and logistical challenge, given the tower’s location directly adjacent to a Metro station.
AHS Properties have established themselves as a big player in the ultra-luxury residential market.
However, this purchase will represent the company’s first foray into the commercial real estate sector.
AHS Properties has also disclosed that the project will feature Grade A offices, two full floors of facilities and services, winter gardens, indoor green spaces, health and wellness facilities, social hubs, and Sky Galleries on the upper levels.
AHS Properties had previously announced the sale of all units in its first office project, while Bloomberg reports indicate that the company acquired the tower in 2024 for approximately $120 million (AED441 million), and that sales of commercial units exceeded $700 million (Dh2.57 billion).
It’s an exciting new chapter for the building, which had remained empty for years; despite the fact it had strong resonance with the public across Dubai and was ingrained in the psyche.
Dubai residents will now have to adjust to life after Big Ben and prepare for a tower with a distinct new identity.
